I love it when companies whose products I already buy contact me to review their products! I love Equal Exchange chocolates. Their dark chocolate has a luscious, deep chocolate flavor, and the company is a worker-owned Fair Trade company to boot. Equal Exchange is "building equitable trade relationships with co-ops of small-scale farmers, while also working to reform an increasingly consolidated and unjust food system."

One of my favorite brands of tortilla chips is Garden of Eatin'. Their tortilla chips are light and crunchy, and they don't drown you in salt. These chips are made with organic corn and simple ingredients. We first switched to Garden of Eatin' tortilla chips when we really started thinking about our sodium intake. Their Blue Chips have half the sodium of the name brand chips we were buying before. I like a little bit of salt on my chips, but they have a no-added sodium tortilla chip that is very good if you want all of the salt to come from your salsa or dips.

Quick! Go to your grocery store and buy some Musselman's applesauce! Musselman's is pairing with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Musselman's is donating ten cents for every package of Musselman's Natural and Healthy Picks applesauce purchased in the month of January. It's part of their Simple Steps, Big Impact initiative. Musselman's hopes that by pairing with the NBCF their consumers will be reminded to take the first simple step of having a mammogram for early breast cancer detection in 2011.

On a personal note, my family loves Musselman's Natural Unsweetened Applesauce. This applesauce has the simple ingredient list that I like - apples, water, and ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C as a preservative). I like to keep this applesauce on hand for my baking, and my husband likes to take it up to work for a midday snack.

We've also become big fans of their Healthy Picks line. My husband adores the Granny Smith flavor, while my son and daughter ask for the Blueberry Pomegranate and Raspberry Acai flavors in the lunch boxes. We've not been such applesauce fiends in the past, but these Healthy Picks flavors have managed to win us over.

Musselman's was kind enough to send me a cookbook as part of their promotion - Substitute Yourself Skinny by Susan Irby. It's full of recipes that lighten up by using sensible substitutions - like replacing fat with applesauce when baking. There are lots of good looking recipes in this cookbook (and applesauce is only one of the many substitutions in the book). We recently tried the Cinnamon-Apple Pancakes. Delish! This recipe makes a great pancake using very little processed sugar and no fat - both are replaced by unsweetened applesauce. This recipe got two thumbs up from us all!

Cinnamon Apple Pancakes
from Substitute Yourself Skinny

1/2 cup plain flour (I used 1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose and 1/4 cup whole wheat flour)
1 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (I doubled this because I'm crazy for cinnamon)
1/8 tsp sea salt
1/4 cup nonfat milk
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well. Add the milk and applesauce, and stir to combine.

Heat a griddle to medium heat and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Pour about 1/4 cup of batter* onto the griddle for each pancake. Cook until the center begins to bubble and the edges are dry. Using a flat spatula, flip the pancakes and continue to cook until lightly browned.

*The batter for these pancakes is very thick. I had to use a spoon to kind of help the spread the batter out a bit on the griddle.

Are you an applesauce fan or the parent of an applesauce fan? Even if you aren't, you'll want to read about two great new applesauce offerings from Musselman's!

We were fortunate enough to try two new applesauces from Musselman's recently. Our family runs the gamut - I don't care so much for snacking on applesauce (though I love using it in baking), my kids are so-so on it, and my husband loves to take some to work as a snack. Despite that, we were universally thrilled with the two new applesauces.

Musselman's Healthy Picks Granny Smith applesauce has that distinctive Granny Smith twang to it. My husband thinks that this is the best applesauce he has ever had. Seriously. Musselman's Totally Fruit Mixed Berry has a strong berry flavor to it. Some flavored applesauces taste mostly of apple with just a hint of whatever flavor it's supposed to taste like. Musselman's Totally Fruit Mixed Berry leaves no doubt - it has berry flavor to spare. My kids were crazy for this applesauce! It's rare for them to actually request applesauce, but not only did they request it, they devoured it.

The Healthy Picks applesauce has no added sugar and, yes, does contain Granny Smith apples as one of the primary ingredients. As a plus, it has added fiber, vitamin C, and calcium. The Totally Fruit applesauce is sweetened with fruit juice and contains real berry puree from several different berries.

Will I buy these? Absolutely! In fact, my one complaint with these applesauces is that they're not available in my area yet! These applesauces were an undeniable hit here, and I can't wait to get my hands on some more! I have a feeling that they will become a pantry staple.

Every now and then I am contacted by a company about reviewing their product, and I can't help but get excited because I know that it's a good product. This is one of those times. I love TERRA Chips and was thrilled when they contacted me to do a review and giveaway.

What makes TERRA Chips different? TERRA chips aren't your run-of-the-mill potato chips. In fact, usually they aren't potato at all! TERRA uses unusual roots and other vegetables to make their chips - things like sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, and blue potatoes. The resulting chip is delicious and unusual and a nice change from a plain old potato chip.

For this review, I tried four different varieties of TERRA chips:

TERRA Exotic Harvest with Sea Salt - This bag full of kabocha squash, carrot, and blue potato chips is my favorite, and one that I actually buy when I'm in the mood for chips. I especially love the flavor of the carrot and kabocha squash chips.
TERRA Original - This bag features their original blend of sweet potato, taro, yuca, batata, parsnip, and ruby taro. This is the bag that introduced me to TERRA chips. It's a nice blend of exotic chips with good flavor and crunch. I have to admit, I find myself selectively picking out the sweet potato and parsnip when I eat this variety.
TERRA a la Mexicana - The classic mix of TERRA chips with a Mexican flair. The seasoning is subtle so the flavor of the chip shines through, but these chips have a nice salsa undertone. A good choice if you want something a little different from a plain chip.
TERRA Blues - Made with blue potatoes, these chips are fun and delicious. A great choice if you are looking for simple potato chips. Interestingly, these chips are the official chips of Jet Blue. How appropriate!

Usually when I hold a giveaway, a company representative has contacted me to see if I'm interested in reviewing their product. This time it's a little different. Some of the other goodies in Cool Whip include our friend HFCS, polysorbate 60, and sorbitan monostearate. Yummy!

Enter Truwhip. No HFCS. No hydrogenated oils. Completely trans fat free! Gluten free. Great flavor.

Take a look at the ingredients:

Water, organic tapioca syrup, expeller-pressed palm kernel oil, organic cane sugar, organic palm kernel oil, contains less than 2% of each of the following: organic soy protein concentrate, sodium caseinate (milk protein), organic tapioca starch, natural flavors, organic soy lecithin, xanthan gum, guar gum. contains milk and soy.

Not as simple as real whipped cream, of course, but Truwhip is a lot lower in calories (30 compared to 100 calories of the same amount of whipped cream). Best of all, Truwhip is a whipped topping I can keep in my freezer until needed, and it works in all of my old recipes that call for Cool Whip. Score!

Who doesn't love nut butters? About this time last year, I switched from my beloved Jif to natural peanut butter. Why? I didn't like all of the extra stuff in the non-natural peanut butters. Regular Creamy Jif, for example, adds sugar, molasses, fully hydrogenated oils, mono and diglycerides, and salt to their roasted peanuts.

So, I switched to the natural stuff. I had memories of natural peanut butter being kind of nasty tasting. Know what? I found that I actually like the flavor of natural peanut butter better! It all depends on the peanut used (so I hear), and the natural peanut butters that I've bought since the switch have had a great fresh roasted peanut butter flavor. MaraNatha is one of the brands that I've bought and enjoyed since making the leap.

Different kinds of nut butters Personally, I like my peanut butter plain jane - just roasted peanuts and nothing else. The only problem with plain jane natural peanut butter is that it separates. When you first open a jar of plain jane natural peanut butter, you have to spend some time pain painstakingly stirring and stirring and stirring to mix the oil back in with the nut butter. But once you've done that chore, you can stick your peanut butter in the fridge and not have to worry with mixing again - at least that's been my experience. The oils solidify in the cold of the fridge, which inhibits separation.

If you're not into stirring, you can buy "no stir" nut butters. The "no stir" nut butters add in an oil - typically palm oil - to keep the nut butter from separating. Sometimes sugar and/or salt will also be added to the "no stir" butters.

Equal Exchange Chocolate and Coffee Giveaway!

Have I got a giveaway for you! Chocolate and coffee! And not just chocolate and coffee, but REALLY GOOD chocolate and coffee. (Ok, the chocolate is definitely good. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't personally vouch for the coffee.)

I was so excited when Mambo Sprouts contacted me asking if I would want to review and/or giveaway an Equal Exchange Chocolate and Coffee gift bag. Why? I already buy Equal Exchange chocolate. I love dark chocolate. Some brands of dark chocolate have an unpleasant chalky taste to me - not so Equal Exchange dark chocolate. The fair-trade system helps to support small scale farmers, and the initiatives taken by the farmer co-ops directly help the farmers' communities. Musselman's helps in the fight against breast cancer

Kudos to Musselman's! They're donating 10 cents to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) for every single package of Musselman's Natural Applesauce sold during the month of January. The NBCF is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for those in need.

Musselman's has been generous with samples of their applesauce in the past, so I can say with confidence that their natural applesauce is good stuff. It has a nice, fresh apple taste that is excellent in baked goods.

Craig's Apple Pork Chops

4 boneless pork chops (1/2 inch thick)
1/4 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 c chopped onion
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 clove minced garlic
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1-1/2 cups MUSSELMAN'S Natural Apple Sauce
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Lightly flour, salt and pepper both sides of the pork chops. In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown pork chops in oil on both sides. Remove chops to a plate, leaving any remaining oil in the skillet. Add onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt and pepper to the skillet to quickly brown 1 minute. Remove from heat, add the apple sauce and cinnamon and stir together. Add pork chops back to the pan and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until center temp is 155 to 165 degrees.

Makes 4 servings

Good Morning Muffins

6 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups MUSSELMAN'S Natural Apple Sauce

Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with bake cups and set aside. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter on high for about 30 to 60 seconds; set aside to cool slightly.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt into a large mixing bowl. In another large bowl, whisk together the eggs and brown sugar. Stir in the applesauce and melted butter until the mixture is smooth. Pour the apple mixture over the flour mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon until combined and you can't see any traces of flour.

Fill the bake cups about two-thirds full with batter. Bake for 20 minutes or until light brown.

Makes 12 servings

Apple Raisin Crumb Pie

2 cups MUSSELMAN'S Natural Apple Sauce
1 cup light brown sugar
3 Tbs. butter
1 cup raisins
4 eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tps. ginger
1/4 tps.nutmeg
2 Tbs. butter
1 9-inch unbaked pie shell with high fluted edge

Place the apple sauce and brown sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; add 3 Tbs. butter and stir until melted. Stir in the raisins. Cool.

In a small mixing bowl, beat the eggs and add to the apple sauce mixture. Pour into the pie shell. Bake in a 375 F. oven on the low rack for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven.

Blend the flour, sugar, and spices and cut in the 2 Tbs. butter until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over the top of the pie and continue baking until the top and crust are golden brown (about 25 minutes).

Makes 8 servings

Wheat Thins goes HFCS free and a Giveaway!

This is not the first time I've written about Wheat Thins. First, I wrote about all of the high fructose corn syrup in Wheat Thins (and other crackers). Next, I wrote about a HFCS-free Wheat Thins cracker that I happen to like a lot while bemoaning the fact that so many Wheat Thins products still have HFCS in them.

Wheat Thins listened! They have started to revamp their crackers to be high fructose corn syrup free! Wheat Thins Original, Reduced Fat, Big, and Hint of Salt are already on the shelves reformulated sans HFCS, and similar changes are coming to other Wheat Thins varieties in 2010. And the crackers reportedly remain free of hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils. Great news!

And now a little word about sugar and HFCS... A lot has been made about companies making the switch from HFCS to sugar. Companies are making the switch from HFCS to sugar and celebrating it - a smart marketing move. No, that simple switch does not make a product instantly healthier. Too much sugar is still too much sugar, and we would all do well to limit our intake of sugar. (Easier said than done for this sugarholic writer, but I'm trying!) But, as you know, I hold a special feeling of disdain for HFCS and think we are better off just not consuming it. I, frankly, am thrilled to see companies making the switch away from HFCS. That's all I have to say on that for now. Companies will listen to what their consumers want, so read those labels and let your pocketbook talk!

I am really excited about the product of the day. Why? I just think it's so refreshing to find a fruit puree made of something other than apples. Not that applesauce is a bad thing, but my family is just not that crazy about it as a snack.

Peter Rabbit Organics fruit puree pouches come in three flavors - mango, banana, and orange flavor; apple and grape; and strawberry and banana. The ingredients of each puree is exactly as described - no added sugar, no preservatives, nothing artificial. Take a look at the ingredients for the mango, banana, and orange flavor: Organic banana, organic mango, organic orange. That's it! Just the fruit, pure and simple! The apple and grape flavor has lemon juice concentrate added, but nothing more.

These fruit pouches have another thing going for them - no spoon required! Simply unscrew the cap and squeeze the puree into your mouth. That's really a nice thing when you're dealing with children. There's less mess (unless you squeeze too much into your child's mouth like I did at first - oops!), and it makes it so easy to toss a pouch into a lunch box or a purse or a stroller for an anytime snack.

But how do they taste? Exactly as you think that they would! The mango, banana, and orange had distinct notes of each fruit. The fruit flavors remained true in the pouch. The banana flavors are our favorites. Surprisingly, the banana flavor did not overwhelm the other flavors. The apple and grape flavor was good, but the apple was the main flavor while the grape flavor was kind of an after thought. Good, but not spectacular. Still, if you're an applesauce fan, this is pretty darn good applesauce.

What about the texture? Well, these are fruit purees. The texture is thick and not at all unpleasant. I'll admit that before I tried these fruit purees I was afraid that it would be like eating baby food. It wasn't.

Would I buy these? Yes!! These fruit puree pouches are being marketed for young children, but I have to tell you, I'm going to buy some for myself! (Ok, I'll grudgingly share with my children.) These pouches are downright tasty, whether you're an adult or a child. I think that they'll be a great healthy snack for on the go.

Fabulous new POM juices!

POM Wonderful recently sent me two new flavors of their pomegranate juice to try. I think that their plain pomegranate juice is fantastic (with some really appealing potential benefits to boot), so I was thrilled to be able to try these new flavors. The new flavors - Pomegranate Nectarine and Pomegranate Kiwi.

You may remember that I reviewed their new POMx tea recently with mixed feelings. I thought that the flavors were good (especially their peach flavored tea) though perhaps a little too sweet but was very disappointed to find fructose as an ingredient. I have no such issues here! These new POM Wonderful juices are all that I have come to expect from Pom. Take a look at the ingredient list for the Pomegranate Nectarine flavor: pomegranate (55%) and nectarine (45%) juices from concentrate, natural flavors. Simple. No added sugar. The Pomegranate Kiwi flavor (and all of their pomegranate juice flavors) has a similar ingredient list.

But how do they taste? The flavors are true. Kiwi has always struck me as a supporting flavor that doesn't really add a whole lot, and I think that this holds with this juice. Still, you can taste the kiwi, it's just a subtle flavor. I thought that the Pomegranate Kiwi juice had a nice flavor, but the pomegranate flavor is what takes center stage.

The Pomegranate Nectarine...wowzers! I love this juice! The nectarine is a type of fuzzless peach, and I am crazy about anything that is peach flavored. Where the kiwi was a supporting flavor in the other juice, the nectarine flavor is an equal player with the pomegranate flavor. This juice has a strong nectarine flavor that is quite marvelous paired with the pomegranate flavor. I have a feeling that this juice will become a regular in our house!

POM Wonderful juices aren't cheap, but their flavors are intense and consistent. I would highly recommend you give these new juices - especially the Pomegranate Nectarine flavor - a try!

My thoughts on POM Tea and a giveaway!

I few weeks ago I was contacted by POM (the pomegranate juice people) asking if I would like to try their new tea - POMx Tea. I really like their juices, so I jumped on the chance to give their tea a try. They sent me a package with several different flavors of the tea, and my husband and I happily set out trying them.

What did we think? Hmmm...it was a mixed bag. First, if you're a serious tea drinker, don't get these drinks expecting a serious tea. (I know, duh! No self respecting serious tea drinker would expect a good bottled tea.) Tea (green, black, or white) is the first ingredient in these teas, but the juice flavor is the prominent one. That's not necessarily a bad thing, in my opinion. The juice flavor is good with the tea flavor as a subtle accent.

I enjoyed these drinks - especially the Pomegranate Peach Passion White POMx Tea, which has a wonderfully intense peach flavor thanks to peach juice from concentrate. My husband's first response was that these drinks are too sweet - and they are, but I like sweet drinks so that's not necessarily a turn off flavor wise for me. Which brings us to the next point...

One unfortunate ingredient No, no, it's not HFCS, but it might as well be as far as our diet is concerned. Sadly, all of the teas contain fructose. I didn't realize this until after I had tried all of the drinks. In fact, I actually bought a second bottle of the peach tea before realizing that it too contains crystalline fructose as an ingredient. (You can read my thoughts on crystalline fructose as an ingredient here. In short, if I'm going out of my way to avoid HFCS - an overly processed ingredient loaded with free fructose - it makes little sense to not also avoid pure free fructose - natural only in the sense that fructose also exists in nature - as an added ingredient.)

Let's take a look at the ingredients on my favorite tea of the bunch, Pomegranate Peach Passion White POMx Tea:

Gently Brewed White Tea (Water, Superior White Peony Tea Leaves), Fructose, POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice from Concentrate, POMX (POM Wonderful Pomegranate Antioxidant Extract - Patent Pending), Peach Juice from Concentrate, Passion Fruit Juice from Concentrate, Natural Flavors, Citric Acid.

Such great ingredients - except for that darn fructose. And the other flavors are similar - great ingredients plus fructose. POM - take out the fructose! The drinks don't need it!

And now for the giveaway Ok, so you know my thoughts on this tea. I liked the taste - hubby thought they were way too sweet - and neither of us liked that they have added fructose. Still...POM was generous enough to provide a coupon for a free bottle of their POMx tea, and I know that not everyone shares my dislike of fructose as an added ingredient. I must admit, I am generally not a user of holistic or non-traditional medicine. It's not that I think that it's all bad - quite the opposite - but I am often put off by the lack of real science backing claims in many cases. I hear so many moms touting the benefits of this wonderful herb or tincture or whatever based solely on anecdotal (and often very weak anecdotes at that) information. I ignored their requests for a while, but their persistence made me look at their information and search around the web a bit. I found nothing during my Sinupret searches that makes me nervous or worried about the medicine but did find many positive reviews of the product, so I decided to go ahead with the giveaway and give you readers a chance to decide for yourselves.
